Four years after debuting Phases EP, Jakarta’s bedroom psychedelic pop Low Pink announces a new release, Dominance on 25 September 2020. Featuring two new tunes “Keep Yourself Away” and “Feelings”, Dominance is a significant turning point in Low Pink’s sound. While Phases EP showcases Low Pink experimenting with raw, unpolished psychedelic rock, Dominance features a softer bedroom pop sound with touches of electronics and R&B without completely leaving the psychedelia that Low Pink has been known for.
Raoul Dikka, the sole mastermind behind the band says that substantial changes in his music taste and approach as a musician and producer have taken place in the last four years since Low Pink’s last release. The band also went through five changes in the line-ups, before ultimately boiled down to its purest form: Raoul as the only member.
On Dominance, Raoul doesn’t sing about a specific theme, but rather a personal observation of people closest to him. The songs on Dominance were originally part of a four-song EP, but due to all the changes and transformations in the band and Raoul’s personal growth, “Keep Yourself Away” and “Feelings” are seen best at reflecting Raoul’s current musicality.
Influenced by names such as Steve Lacy, BOYO, Mk.gee, and Clairo, Raoul consciously writes and produces music using a new approach with hope of reaching new listeners, local and abroad.
Dominance is released digitally by Kolibri Rekords while Jakarta’s boutique label Gabe Gabe Tapes is putting it out on tapes with one extra song. The first single “Keep Yourself Away” was released on 18 September 2020 in the form of a lyric video.
The cover artwork is done by Jakarta’s illustrator, Fraw while Ratta Bill handles the design. To celebrate the release of Dominance, an online showcase by Low Pink will take place very soon.
